day 10: more is never enough

hi guys! welcome back to maia & more! as of this moment, i'm still on the cruise, so today is written again by past maia.

today we'll talk about overconsumption. over the past few years, overconsumption content has been gaining popularity. these are videos of people restocking their guest bathrooms or purses with 3+ of the same product and other similar ones. usually, it takes months to empty out one of these products, and when people buy an excessive amount, it literally just ends up as trash.

there are so many videos that i see people react to where the creator has 5+ of the same water bottle, just in a different color. you really don't need that many because reusable water bottles are meant to be reused and help reduce plastic waste. by buying or being gifted additional ones, you not only create clutter in your house, but also clutter on our planet in general.

another way that overconsumption is taking over, is brands sending pr packages with the entire shade range of a foundation, or any product, when obviously one person won't use every shade. i know that the reason behind this is to gain attention for the brand on social media and one of the main marketing strategies right now is to send big, flamboyant pr so that the brand sticks out.

but i'm sorry, WHEN has this ever been okay?? nobody is going to use all of that foundation or whatever product was sent when there are at least 10 of that product. especially, when shades that are meant for much deeper skin tones are sent to influencers that are as pale as a sheet of paper.

okay, maybe the influencer does a giveaway and sends the product to their followers who can actually use it. but if they had already swatched each shade, then the seal has already been broken, and you can no longer give it away to people you don't even know.

this "overconsumption culture" has to stop. since the beginning of 2026, i've seen more and more creators post their "no buy" lists and many of them include not buying a similar product unless the original one has run out. this, is commonly known as project pan, and i'm 100% a fan of it.

a reoccurring product that i see creators talk about in their "no buy 2026" videos, are iphones. as i'm sure everybody knows, each year, phone companies release their newest model and it becomes all the rage (whether good or bad). and every year, people buy that new model, when their old one hasn't even been a year old yet. i'm not going to go too deep into that, but inevitably, it creates so much waste.

i'll insert a few pictures of other things that i personally think are way over consumed.
sonny angels, though they are cute (and i have one), nobody needs a whole collection of something that's just going to turn into trash later. people are also constantly buying things and having packages arrive at their doorsteps (represented by the middle image). lastly, fast fashion takes over so much of people's closets and the landfill. single use clothes should not be the norm, even if they are convenient (though brands like ZARA are expensive, that doesn't mean they aren't fast fashion.).

hopefully by reading, when you think about buying something new, you'll think about todays post. i really hope this showed you a different side of consumerism/overconsumption and thank you for reading today's post! tomorrow i'll be back from the cruise and hopefully i'll share some pictures and my overall opinions on cruising!

don't wish for it, work for it
